AOD conversion

I have a 1981 Ford F-150, 302 with an AOD transmission. I have had so many problems with this transmission. I want to take it out and put another one in of a different model. I don't hot rod it (yet lol) and don't pull heavy cargo. It is just as much of a second vehicle as it is a tool when I need it. What transmission will fit behind the motor and not hurt the motor, or rear end, with minimum changeover (crossmember, drive shaft, etc.) required?
