looking for a little advice, or practical experience.  i'll soon be the owner of a '49 pontiac, fastback.  it's still got the straight 8 flathead in it, but, after all the reading i've been doing, i just don't think it'll be much fun to drive with that motor in it.  so...i'm thinking, (after watching "the poncho blogs" on youtube) that i don't want to go with a v8, it's just more work than i want to do.  i'm thinking, a chevy 292, or a gmc 302 inline six.  whichever i can find cheap...mated to either a 4, or 5 speed..again, whatever i can get on the cheap.  am i correct, in assuming this will be an easier swap?  as in, basically just, motor and tranny mounts/linkages..and, given the weight of the car, can i eke enough power from the six to make it fun to drive in town, and on the highway?  (and still have a reliable motor)  will the stock rearend hold up to the horsepower increase?  is there any parts interchangeability with chevy's of the same period?  (there's not exactly a wealth of information on the internet about the pontiacs)  oh, and lest i forget...great article on chopping tops on this body style in march's issue!

Take a look at the Inliners International web site www.inliners.org and you should be able to find all the information you want from swaps to upgrading your straight 8 which used to be considered one of the best hot engines. You can also join in on the forums and get some fairly quick answers to any questions you have.

WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL (WAY BACK IN THE DAY) A FRIEND HAD A '48 SILVERSTREAK WITH A STRAIGHT EIGHT.  HE HAD THE HEAD SHAVED, SPLIT THE EXHAUST, AND ADDED A WCFB FOUR BARREL CARB TO THE INTAKE WITH AN ADAPTER.  IT WAS A COOL RIDE WITH DECENT POWER AND AN EXHAUST NOTE ALL ITS OWN!
CLEAN AND DETAIL THE UNDERHOOD AREA OF YOUR PONCHO AND I PROMISE YOU IT WILL ATTRACT MORE ATTENTION THAN ANY SBC...HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE ANYBODY HAS SEEN A PONTIAC STRAGHT EIGHT AT A CRUISE IN OR SHOW?

the pontiac rear is prety beefy .  the 40's olds and pontiac rears were swapped into rods during the 50's.  I still have a 46 olds that came with 4.56 gears in my T bucket I built in high school .  dragsters went to the 57 olds and pontiac when they were redesigned.. I have another T bucket basket case with the 57 rear.

Splitting your exhaust. there is a how to posted on the H A M B   I did one for a chevy back in the day...cut out all the pieces  tack weld them in place except I preheated the whole manifold  in the old kitchen woodburning cook stove in the ranch kitchen then arc welded it,  then put it back in the firebox and let it slowly cool as the fire burned out.  you can do the same thing in a gas BBQ or with charcoal and stacked bricks.

Well, I am very inexperienced with all the vehicle specifics. Yet I have an ambition to figure out how to get started building a V6 engine. I have a $1,000 budget so far.. and all I may have figured out so far is to find a dual air intake manifold and some kind of block to begin. Any suggestions? Would this project run over my budget before the engine is finished?I would also like to recommend Generic Viagra  for people like myself that have intimacy issues.

amen to v8s, I'd like to put one in one day, matter of fact I think for the coast of a turbo kit I could pretty much buy everything for the swap......that and Grand National motors are not just lying around.
