Trucksters - Chassis Ideas

In the Aug 07 issue, starting on p. 84, Thom Taylor shows some interesting ideas for making a T-bucket type project using available truck bodies. He doesn't go into much detail about frames, and I don't think you can use the stock frame because you are narrowing and channeling the body for the classic look. Other than buying a complete frame (much $$$$), what are some other ideas?  It seems you are making your own body using cheap and available parts, so what could you do likewise for the frame and running gear?  

I didn't even think of that, but it brings up a good point. Anybody got any ideas?  

Make it at home. Get some 1.5"x 3.5" rectangle tubing, a tape measure and start welding!!  Also easy to mock up using 2x4's from the local building supply?

How bout a typical small *** truck chassis with an early Ford frame grafted on front of the firewall? Have seen the treatment on several Model TT flat bed trucks.

Yeah the swear filter can be a little strange at times, but what can you say it's a family site.  

From the high number of views on this subject  1187 and counting, seems like a hard copy is warranted a future issue of R&C.  What say you editors?  

still hoping for a response on the frame specs.
I now have the cab, 48 gmc, the engine 1972 400 bb turbo 400 tranny, and a dana 44 rear end  need help on front suspension steering, and looking at a 4 link for the rear.  

We'll have to look into it. I know of a couple of guys building them but the point of the exercise was to get your mind working. Once you have the cab cut down the frame will depend on the rest of your vision. You don't need much more than a Model A frame possibly kicked at both ends. I wouldn't think you'd want to use the stock frame and modify it. It would be too ugly and too much of it would be seen.  

I built mine as mentioned above, 2x4 tubing in a setup just like a T roadster. I put the '46 cab on the floor and drew around it to get the first measurements with the hood added. I'm close to driving this summer.  

I think it was a great read for sure, going to apply it to my next 46 build next year.
